Is Morocco a women-friendly monarchy? We provide intellectual input during the festival – with the possibility of buying a drink in the bar  – as Rania Maktabi joins us to discuss gender equality in Morocco before the screening of EVERYBODY LOVES TOUDA on Saturday, April 5.

Morocco is a monarchy where King Mohammed VI (b. 1963) descends from a dynasty that has ruled the country since the 1630s. When the king ascended to the throne in 1999, he initiated large-scale reforms to strengthen the position of women in the country. What did these changes involve? Why did women-friendly reforms become part of Morocco’s politics? How have the reforms affected Moroccan society? Rania Maktabi, a political scientist at Østfold University College, sheds light on one of the Middle East’s most stable states. She highlights what makes this North African country one of the region’s most exciting nations to follow!

The mini-lecture will take place in Vikakjelleren from 15:00 to 15:20, providing academic context before the screening of EVERYBODY LOVES TOUDA, which starts at 15:45. You do not need a ticket for the film to attend the event.
