This 45 minute long (short) film takes on the choice of wearing a hijab in a secular country like France. 15-16 year old Mariam is raised in a secular Muslim household. Mariam is cool, has good friends and listens to hip-hop. She surprises everyone when she shows up wearing a hijab on the first day of school after the summer break. Kareem, the cutest “Arab” in class, also notices the change. Due to the ban of religious symbols in French schools, Mariam is denied entrance to the classroom until she removes her hijab. What will she do now? Mariam is an eye-opening and charming film. The Saudi Arabian director Faiza Ambah sets focus on forced secularism. Do not let the films length stop you from seeing it!
