Madaniya
In MADANIYA, filmmaker Mohamed Subahi follows three Sudanese youths fighting for change as Sudan undergoes the December Revolution of 2018–2019.
The word madaniya—meaning civil society in Norwegian—became a central slogan of the uprisings in Sudan against the oppressive regime that ruled the country for 30 years. At the heart of the uprisings were Sudanese youth who turned to social media and took to the streets to demand the removal of the sitting president. Their demand was freedom, peace, and justice. The documentary shows how violence and sorrow sparked a powerful cry for change. The film premiered at the Cairo International Film Festival in 2024.
